"Gesche Wuefel's photographs engage with a contemporary political geography of urban spaces, but not in the usual sense in which we understand the term geography. Rather, hers is a probing, interrogating and yet poetic gaze that asks fundamental questions about the nature of 'development', 'master-planning' and the management of urban landscapes. Her images invite us to reassess our relationship, not only with the subject of the gaze, but also with the photographic trace itself. Once we have seen these images, we are left with a disturbing idea that somehow, we have been complicit in witnessing the site of an as yet future trauma."
